Dental Crown
A dental crown is a type of fixed prosthesis designed to cover and restore a tooth that is too severely damaged to be repaired with basic treatments such as fillings. Patients can choose from a variety of materials depending on cost and functional needs. Options range from porcelain, which can be color-matched to blend naturally with surrounding teeth, to gold or metal alloys that offer superior strength and durability for chewing.
With proper care and maintenance, dental crowns can last approximately 10–20 years.
In addition, dentists may recommend dental crowns in the following situations:
-
Teeth that are weakened and at risk of cracking, or when damage has extended into the dental pulp
-
Severely decayed or damaged teeth that cannot be restored with conventional fillings

-
In general, patients who have undergone root canal treatment are advised to receive a dental crown to prevent potential damage, such as tooth fractures, since the tooth structure becomes weaker. Without proper protection, this may eventually lead to tooth loss.
-
Dental crowns are also recommended for teeth that have deteriorated due to various causes, such as acid reflux, teeth grinding (bruxism), or discoloration from tetracycline use or Improving the appearance of teeth, including closing gaps or enhancing overall aesthetics

Dental Crown Procedure
-
The dentist evaluates the tooth condition and the extent of damage to determine suitability for a crown.
-
A portion of the tooth structure is reduced, and impressions are taken to design a properly fitting crown.
-
A temporary crown is placed while waiting for the final crown to be fabricated.
-
Adjustments may be made based on the patient’s bite and function before sending the final design to the laboratory.
-
The final crown is then placed, adjusted for proper bite and comfort, and securely cemented for full function.

Follow your dentist’s instructions carefully and attend all scheduled appointments to ensure successful treatment.

-
Avoid very hard or sticky foods, and do not misuse your teeth, as this may damage the crown.
